With all the media buzzing about Roatan's recent crime spree, robberies, murders and the like.... I thought I should address this as 1) someone living on the Island for 15 years, and 2) to put this into its proper perspective. Roatan is a great island and will continue to be so. But there is an unwelcome element here just like anywhere in the world. Here's some tips to help you stay safe during your vacation!
This time of year, anything can blow in. Trade winds usually pick up and believe it or not, it's the rainy season on the Honduran mainland... and although they are getting their share of the liquid sunshine, we're pretty much dry and hot over here on the island. But we do get some of the effects of storms over there this time of year... so be prepared!
I bet Bob Marley would have loved this... and you can too when you visit the islands.. mon. Hair braiding for men and women... from $15 for your total head! That is a steal of a deal as it takes 2 ladies more than 70 minutes to do... and they even throw in the beads for you!! Such a fun thing to do while on vacation...
Although we're not situated in the hurricane belt, that doesn't mean we don't get bad weather nor that we're totally exempt from them. In fact, Ernesto grazed us just this week! On average, Roatan has been hit by a hurricane every 24 years! That's pretty good odds that you'll not ever experience one here. But with the wonky weather these days, it's always good to be prepared!!
This year's Taste of Roatan was held on world famous West Bay Beach and 13 local restaurants showcased their offerings here today! What a great day to sample lobster, shrimp, soups and 'pinchos' from around the island! Cheap too. Prices ranged from $1-4 for bite-sized samples that more than satisfied the pallet. Gaby and I spent a total of $20 and were quite satisfied after sampling 6 or so of the foods....
This time of year, there are fewer visitors to the islands... and that's just great for us! It's kind of like relatives coming to your home... great to see them come and great to see them go! But even though there are less week-long vacationers coming to Roatan, there are still cruise ships in port some days so you won't be all alone on the beach!
Well, it's May... hands down the slowest month of the year here in paradise.... and while it's not so good for tourism and for the local business owners... it's actually REALLY good for those of you wishing to buy property. The weather is amazing... there's lots of deals on places to stay and there's no crowds on the beaches.. but why is it a good time to shop for that 2nd or retirement home? Take a look...
If you're even remotely interested in a fishing charter while visisting our paradise.. then you MUST get a hold of this guy... Capt. Brooks! With more than 17 years experience in these waters, Brooks knows where to go to get your 'fix'. Comfort or island style.. Brooks has 2 boats to choose from! Wahoo, Baracuda, Tuna... you name it.. Capt. Brooks is your man!!
Many folks visiting Roatan would like to see more... and touring the island by car is probably the best way to see the many villages, remote places and tourist attractions! You can rent a car, or take an island tour from one of the locals... but before you decide to get behind the wheel, take heed... there is no driver's education here... road safety, driver courtesy and caution are not terms I'd use to describe the experience here... here's more...
There's a new kid in town... and he's quite the catch!! Roatan's newest 5-star development is well under way on West Bay Beach -- The Grand Roatan! It is going to be amazing and pre-sales are happening right now. If you'd like more information or to reserve your piece of this island... contact me and I'll represent you as a Buyer's Agent.. Take a sneak peak here...
It sure seems like it here on Roatan these days.. With Easter week DONE... everyone has left the island... and it is ominously quiet here. The beaches are empty, where just a couple days ago 3,000 peeps lined the shores. Personally, I love this time of year. Roatan truly resembles that tropical hideaway that attracted me here 15 years ago!!
