That is the question you have to ask yourself when deciding to retire here. The easiest one is to rent a condo or home, work out a great deal with a landlord or split costs with a roommate and enjoy every day of paradise here in Roatan, until you are ready to buy. You will of course have to become a resident of Honduras and if you want to drive you are required to retake your drivers license tests in all cases.
There are many available condos and homes for purchase on the market, click here to browse
Now if you want to buy a condo or home . . . you can purchase and sell property on Roatan without a real estate agent, not recommended for people who are unfamiliar with the island and even those who live here. If you’re an offshore buyer, a lack of knowledge about the island and time constraints greatly effect the acquisition of your home/property. If you live on Roatan, hiring an agent will prove invaluable. An experienced realtor knows island property extensively. Roatan was listed in CNNmoney.com’s as #1 in the “Hottest foreign second home markets for 2007”!
Buying Land requires more red tape to work through. An individual foreigner can only own three quarters of an acre on Roatan. If you’re interested in a larger property, you’ll have to form a Honduran corporation. When you form a corporation, you maintain control over the property by naming yourself administrator. There are currently no building restrictions on corporate properties.
