There's a lot to be said about the golden years... especially if one's nest egg remains intact and everything you've labored for over the dozens of years of employment is surely coming to fruition. Like the dream of moving to a tropical island in the Caribbean upon retirement - with the stock market acting more like an amusement ride (except without the excitement these days) than an investment tool, despairingly the dream light is dimming for so many.
But there are still those brave few that explore new frontiers in hopes their shrinking portfolios may have a reincarnation after all. Those emerging frontiers are the places dreams are made of... the places where they really do come true.
Enter the Island of Roatan! Still unheard of around the poker table. Relatively new in the tourism arenas. Remote enough to be mystical and close enough to hop down for the weekend from the US, Roatan offers probably the best value in secondary and investment properties in the Western Hemisphere today!
With prices 1/4 to 1/3 of that of similar Caribbean isles, Roatan just may stretch those retirement dollars of yours to the max once again! It's cheap to buy here and cheap to live here! Groceries cost less than the States. Taxes are less than the States. Domestic help costs FAR LESS than the States. So what would you do with all your extra cash then? Well, there's where the quality of your retirement comes in. If you can get the same lifestyle as say the Cayman Islands, US Virgin Islands, or Belize Cays for a lot less money....wouldn't you want to know more?
Golfing, fishing, diving, exploring ancient cultures, shopping.... it's all part of living on Roatan today! Check us out! For a more indepth study of life on Roatan, go to www.BuyRoatan.com and watch my videos on real life right here in the tropics!
As real estate prices and activity in the islands rebounds from last year's disastrous political nonsense, once again, West Bay is becoming the focal point of the recovery boom! More people look to invest in beach front or 'near the beach' property than any other type of real estate on Roatan. It's no wonder then that developers are now scurrying to jump start condo projects that sat on the back burners over the past 20 months or so.
Email inquiries are up. Sales are up. Listings are up. Visitors to Roatan are up!… and it looks like it's even going to get better this fall during our peak season! Reservations are trickling in and according to 2 hoteliers I met with over the weekend, bookings are 'brisk' compared to last year.
MLS listings and analysis show West Bay Beach is the hot spot on Roatan right now and I've personally experienced this mad dash for property as well with my own clients. My advice? BUY BEFORE NOVEMBER! There's a lot happening right now that will generate increased prices and a lot more activity in our market this summer. So, if you want to take advantage of some of the "must sells" or the "make an offer" deals… NOW is the time to consider a trip here and to check out if Roatan is right for you! You heard it here… come November, it may just be too late! Email me at tj@buyroatan.com if you'd like information on moving/buying here...
For many of you who are considering the Bay Islands, and specifically Roatan as a possible retirement spot, a couple of things to consider: 1) you may want to make an exploratory trip down soon, and 2) when to make that trip.
I encourage those who contact me to come to paradise during the slow season to really get the "feel" of the place… for when the cruise ships are in port, or high season is upon us in the hotels.. it's more touristy and the "island magic" can get lost in the intent. Right now and continuing into late June, is low season in the tropics. That means there's less tourists, less cars and buses on the roads and more table choices at local restaurants and bars. You can chat longer with local waiters and bartenders, barter prices better with local merchants and generally be treated with more patience and time.
Roatan is an amazing place. Rich with culture from Black Caribs (African freed slaves), Spanish, Dutch, Arab, English and German influences… and now Italian too! Come on down for a visit, but first, send me an email to find out which hotels are offering discounts during this time. Some of them are offering up to 30-40% off their normal rates…. tj@buyroatan.com
Once you've decided to move to the Tropics, there's always the question of your personal belongings that you simply can't live without. Roatan has a number of options to get your "stuff" down here in one piece. Jackson Shipping out of Tampa, FL…. Hyde Shipping out of Miami, FL…. Dipp Shipping out of Miami, FL as well. The first two offer freight services only--meaning you'll need to clear customs using a broker and pay duties, taxes, etc on items you import (unless you have a Dispensa which is a document from Immigration allowing you a one time duty free importation of your household goods).
If you use Dipp Shipping (I know…it's a funny name), they can quote you "door to door' delivery and they include the cost of shipping, taxes, duties and delivery all into one charge. I've known many people who are very happy with Dipp and would recommend them.
Whichever way you choose, you CAN get your stuff here directly to the island without a lot of hassle! That is good news and just one more thing that makes Roatan an excellent Retirement choice!!
Well, I never thought I'd see the day that Roatan has a championship Golf course... or even a goat track course for that matter. But alas, it's here! The Black Pearl, located in Pristine Bay opened yesterday with 9 holes and free green fees. You had to only pay $30 for a cart, PLUS $25 for a caddie, but you could shoot 2 rounds of 9 for no cost!!
Dozens of golfers flocked to try the new links--except for me. I'll wait a bit before I go. But I'm so excited both for me and my fellow golfers and for Roatan as a tourist destination! Just one more thing now for people to do and another reason to come down and check us out!
With the mega mall shopping center opening last fall and now the golf course.. Roatan is looking more attractive all the time for retirees....
