By now, everyone here on Roatan has seen the new yellow lines down the center of the main road, paid for, in part, by the Roatan Realtors Association. This will make our driving, especially night driving, much safer. The lines give definition to the lanes and for the most part drivers are obeying the solid and dotted lines. It helps to keep the drivers from cutting corners as well. Now, here's the real version:
Some time ago, the local Real Estate board of the Bay Islands (North Coast chapter of ANABIR - Honduran National Association of REALTORS) invited Mayor Jerry Hynds, Italo Tugliani along with various other Island dignataries to a convening of their monthly Board of Realtors meeting.
At the meeting--amoung other things we'll talk about in another post--the Board presented the group of VIP's with a program to stripe the main Hwy down the middle and that they'd pay even pay for it (up to a certain estimated price). Well supported by evidence that road lines DO save lives, slow down traffic, assist in accident accessment, and reduce traffic congestion, the REALTORS thought their plan seemed well received.
And, with little more than a smile and a hand shake, they were off. Nothing more was said for months....and months...until one day a survey crew showed up in the middle of the West Bay/West End turn off. And there they were again the next day, and then the next...and the next.
And then a little tractor with spray guns and a paint drum began rolling those giggly yellow stripes down the center of the Highway... and we knew they heard us. We knew they not only heard....they'd RESPONDED. The road that was unstriped for more than 6 years.....was now being made safer...
Then they came to collect money from us. They remembered that part too.
The End.
