With the introduction of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to the Island this season, more and more tour operators, taxis, buses and ammenties for the "tourist" are popping up all over Roatan. One such popular activity that draws up to 300 people per day each is the numerous Canopy Tours...or zip lines from tree top to tree top... There's 2 in West Bay and 2 others mid Island.
Recently, my son Jayson turned 7 and for his birthday (attended by more than 20 local and ex-pat kids) I took him, Grady (my 5 year old) and his closest friends on one such adventure. The Gumbalimba Park offers Roatan's first and still best Canopy Tour. For about $35 bucks you are suspended high in the jungle canopy with only a stainless steel cable to hold you as you glide effortlessly about 100 feet in the air!
Not only a great tourist attraction, these Canopy Tours make some megabucks...you do the math. Cruise ships love em...locals dig em...and it's a great way to release some tension and be "one with nature". This was my first time (even though they've been on the Island a couple years, now) and I can truely say...it was an adrenaline rush from start to finish....
