When Shelley and I landed here back in 1997, we saw an Island, pure, gentle and wondered why more people hadn't discovered this pristine paradise. Back then, there were about 30,000 inhabitants on Roatan and we had to talk a big talk to convince investors to consider this 3rd world Island...... we had no telephone, no cell phones, no paved roads, no Hummers, (we brought the first Jeep) .... just great people and cheap land. That was then.....
January 30th, 2007 marks a major turning point for this Island, and the Bay Islands as a whole. That was the day that the new "Free Port" bill became law. It's official....we are a Freeport!
And although there is a lot of bylaws and "meat" that will get added to the bones of the act, we are officially, a Tax Free Zone!!! Starting June 1st this year....we will enjoy the benefits of other Caribbean destinations with similar duty free status....Caymans, Turk & Caicos, and others.
Roatan is ready. The people are excited. Prices are rising. Investors are coming more now than ever before. The tide is turning. We are poised for the biggest increase in property values in Honduras history....and we still don't really know it. Or understand it. But it's real. And it's happening now. It's time to buy if you're considering it. More to come soon....
