Real estate deals are all over the place in Roatan, that is if you have an experienced eye for island real estate. There is a fantastic little known area called Flower's Bay that is a jewel to be had. Flower's Bay is a quaint place where local island people and foreigners live together. The west side of Flower's Bay (the area with huge potential) settles right next to the newly named Pirate's Cove (more on this in a second, it is significant). Flower's Bay is on the south side of the island and is about a 3 to 4 minutes drive from both the West End and West Bay (where you find most of the island's night life). The south shore of the island is the windward side of the island. There is a constant breeze on this side of the island. In addition, you will not find sandy beaches but iron shore. Iron shore is really molten lava from ages ago that has hardened. Flower's Bay has one small inlet where you will find divers entering when the south side of the island is calm. The island does have bugs, like most places, and the combination of iron shore and the windward side of the island keeps the bugs away.
When you leave the airport and you drive through Coxen's Hole, keep driving till the pavement ends and turns right. If you stay on the pavement road you will go to the West End or West Bay in a few minutes drive. If you go straight down the island dirt road you will find this quaint island paradise. The west side of Flower's Bay you will find several large houses ($600,000 - $1,000,000) and a small six condo building. There is still plenty of land and there are still a couple of waterfront lots still available. The oldest church on the island is located in West Flower's Bay. There is also a small local owned 'Beach Bar' in the area where foreigners and locals both go and join in dominoes and tasting of the local beers.
Now, one of the interesting points to make about this area is that "rumor has it" a little known chain of hotels named the Hyatt may be joining forces to develop 160 acres about 150 yards away from West Flower's Bay. The area in which they bought is now named 'Pirate's Cove'. The plan is to build a casino (you cannot gamble unless you hold a valid passport), a marina, and a resort. The tropical sleepy area of Flower's Bay will become a mint, still holding the dirt road sleepy island feel. Stay tuned for more on this...
