Dixon Cove, a quiet, protected harbour on Roatan's south shore is the location for the new Carnival Cruise Ship dock currently under construction. "Mahogany Bay", as it's named, will be a large first class facility capable of handling up to 7,000 passengers per day. Scheduled to be completed October, 2009, the aggressive 22 month time frame to build, along with the $50M price tag is being masterminded by a joint venture between Carnival Corporation and local Congressman, Honorable Jerry Hynds. Hynds owns the 20 acre parcel for the Terminal as well as adjacent tourist hot spot, Coral Cay.
Mahogany Bay is expected to host more than 500,000 visitors each year and an entire village including shops, restaurants, services and more is planned at the facility. Ground broke November 15th and it is likely to be completed on schedule.
